Universal Patinas

The Univeral Patinas provide you with numerous unique patina colors to give you an unlimited variety of finishes. These patinas are designed to be used on any type of metal as well as the Metal Coatings. They may also be blended with each other or any other type of patina. Universal Patinas are non-reactive, UV safe, and do not contain acids.  They are best applied cold, although patinas on this chart with an * may be applied hot.  Any metal surface needs to be clean before application.

Universal Patinas

The Universal Patinas were made to go directly onto any metal or the Metal Coating.  An additional easy and safe patina technique for ferrous metal or aluminum is to first apply a metal primer (zinc ‘rustoleum’ type), then apply the Universal Patinas, and finish with a clear sealer.  Using this method, Derby and Trainer Pattengill created the following patinas:

Rick Hardman of Alexander Manufacturing has also developed an interesting technique using the Universal Patinas. He first applies a clear sealer to the metal, then the Universal Patinas, and finishes with another layer of clear sealer. This allows the metal show through but makes the patina application easier and more even.  More of Rick’s work may be seen here.
