Traditional Patinas

Traditional patinas are mixtures of chemicals that react with the surface of metal to create different colors. We offer the following pre-mixed patina formulas for your convenience. Many additional formulas are available in our books and videos.

General Tips:  One gallon of traditional patina will cover approximately 200 square feet.  When working with iron or steel, we recommend not rinsing the patina with water after the patina has developed.  Always apply a good metal sealer, such as Permalac, as soon as the patina has dried (except Japanese Brown: apply the sealer after 12 hours).

Quick recommendations for iron & steel:
Browns/Blacks - Japanese Brown patina, Darkening patina, PC-9 by Birchwood Casey.
Greens - the only 'acid' patina in a green shade would be Vista Green (see Vista Patinas).

Birchwood Casey Patinas

General Instructions:  Birchwood Casey patinas are sold concentrated.  Please dilute with up to 50% with distilled water before use. All of these patinas are considered traditional patinas that will age or darken the metal. Apply a clear sealer when finished.  Do not wait long to apply the sealer when working with iron, steel, or aluminum.  The Birchwood Casey Gels make it easier to achieve an even patina and work well on vertical surfaces.

Solutions for Bronze, Brass, and Copper:
M-38 is a spray, brush or emersion Brown Antiquing Solution.
M-24 is a spray or brush Black Antiquing Solution.
M-20 is the same Black Antiquing Solution, but is made for an emersion (dipping) process.

Solution for Iron & Steel:
PC-9 Presto Black (Gun Bluing) spray, brush, or emersion.

Solutions for Aluminum:
A-14 spray or brush Black Antiquing Solution for Aluminum.
A-15 is the same Black Antiquing Solution, but is made for an emersion process.

Soultion for Pewter:
PB-1 Black Antiquing Solution for Pewter.

Traditional Brown Patinas

Ferric Nitrate is a hot patina for bronze, brass, and copper. In addition, it is often used to rust iron and steel.
Ferric Nitrate/Ferric Chloride is a hot patina for bronze, brass, and copper.
Japanese Brown is a patina for iron and steel, which may be applied hot or cold.  This patina will create a golden color on bronze, brass, and copper.
Tan is patina for all metals and may be applied hot or cold.

Potassium Dichromate is an interesting orange patina for bronze, brass, and copper.  Also, when diluted, Potassium Dichromate may be used as a stop out for rust on iron and steel.
Deep Brown is a beautiful mahogany/brown patina for Bronze, Brass, and Copper.
Please click here for application instructions and color samples for these patinas.

Mahogany is a patina best used on copper.  When used on a polished surface a beautiful transparent brown patina will form with swirls of color. On a non-polished surface a nice brown will appear.  On bronze or brass, this patina turns a nice brown.  Mahogany works well as a base patina under traditional greens or blues as it will make these colors more vibrant.  In addition, Mahogany is one of the few patinas that will react with stainless steel, resulting in a gray color.

Antiquing patina beautifully and easily ages bronze, brass, copper, iron, and steel.
Darkening patina is great for aging or darkening the Metal Coatings or cold cast/resin materials, yet it will darken all other metals as well. This patina will create a beautiful transparent brown on iron and steel.

Traditional Blue Patinas

Cupric Nitrate is a hot patina for bronze, brass, and copper, which creates a blue/green beautiful finish.
Powder Blue is a cold patina for bronze, brass, and copper.  This patina is a stable blue and a good choice for outdoor work.
Indoor Blue
patina is strictly for indoor use only.  It should be applied under the same conditions as the light green patina.

Traditional Green Patinas

Light Green Patina is only for use on bronze, brass, and copper.  Apply to a clean, cold (65°-70°F) metal.  It will take 2-12 hours to completely react with the metal.

Mint Green is a patina for bronze, brass, and copper that may be applied hot or cold.
Tiffany Green is a cold patina for bronze, brass, and copper.
These two patinas are for both indoor and outdoor work.  Specifically, Mint Green patina will create a beautiful green while in the full sun and is recommended when working outdoors on copper roofs and gutters.  An alternative green when working outdoors in the sun is our Vista Green Patina.  Tiffany patina should be applied in the shade, but once the patina has developed it may be placed in full sun. Both of these patinas will cause rust on iron and steel (Tiffany Green makes the most beautiful, orange rust).

Liver of Sulfur

Sometimes called sulfurated potash, Liver of Sulfur is a very old base patina. It works well on large outside bronzes because it is relatively easy to apply and provides an attractive, warm brown. You must mix this solution fresh each time you patina since it will keep only one or two days once mixed in water.   Any surface with Liver of Sulfur patina must be washed thoroughly before any other patinas are applied.  Store in a cool dry area.

To make this patina:  mix 1 teaspoon of Liver of Sulfur with 1 pint of warm water.

Patina Stain

Are you confused by the patina process or having difficulty with your metal?  Try our new Patina Stain. The Patina Stains are blended to match chemical or traditional patinas without the fuss.

Because the patina stains include a blend of our Solvent Dyes and Permalac sealer, they are UV stable.  These stains may be sprayed, brushed, or rubbed on any metal.  They should be thinned to produce any shade.  They are available in Verde (Copper Green), Black (looks like gun bluing or PC9), and Brown (oil rubbed bronze).  One gallon of patina stain covers approximately 300 sq/ft.  For best results, over-spray with clear Permalac after application.

The patina stains are available in normal and environmentally friendly formulas.  The environmentally friendly formula has lower VOC, no solvent odor, and may be thinned with Permalac EF or acetone.
