Wax

We have taken the finest quality waxes known for metal to make a special blend designed specifically for metals and patina finishes. Containing UV inhibitors and hardeners, this wax is incredibly durable and long lasting. Each color of wax is made in two formulas - one for bronze, brass, copper, and aluminum - and the other for iron & steel.

General Tips:  Apply to a hot or cold surface. Stippling with a brush may be the preferred method of application so as to not create streaking on the surface. Try not to let the clear wax fill up in any recessed areas as it may turn white. Use a toothbrush or soft brush to remove the excess wax from these areas. When using the colored waxes the build up in the recessed areas is desirable. If you are waxing on a cold surface with the clear wax, buff after 15 to 30 minutes. Let the colored wax sit longer (up to an hour), then buff. The colored waxes take much longer to dry. If you are applying the wax to a hot surface, let the surface cool down, then buff. Do not apply the wax to extremely hot surfaces; let the surface cool down somewhat. Do not wait longer than these times to buff in any circumstance as the wax soon dries too hard. Lacquer or varnish may be applied over a hot application of wax once it has cooled, if there is only one coat of hot wax.

Permalac Lacquer

Permalac is an incredible solvent lacquer for all types of metals (contains inhibitors for Iron & Steel and well as Bronze, Brass, & Copper).  Lasts ten years outside!  Great over patinas or directly on polished metal - it will not discolor the surface.  The satin/gloss finish is just right - not too glossy or too flat.  The Matte Permalac is the same lacquer only with a flattener added. We suggest using the regular Satin/Gloss Permalac as your first coat, then the Matte Permalac as the top coat.  Permalac is available in a 16oz spray can or 8oz, 32oz, 1 Gallon, & 5 Gallon size containers. Call or e-mail for drum prices.  Permalac EF (environmentally friendly) has lower VOC and no solvent odor.

Permalac 2K

Permalac 2K is a two part clear lacquer for when you need an extra strong finish.  This formulation should be used on fountains, counter tops, high traffic areas, and in harsh outdoor conditions.  General directions:  apply one layer of original Permalac, wait two hours until fully cured, then apply two layers of Permalac 2K (with no more than 30 minutes between coats).

Metal Cleaner

A good metal cleaner is a great way to get the surface ready to work on. Sometimes mild acids are used but often they can interfere with the patina process to come later. Industrial Metal Supply developed a great metal cleaner; it works on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.  This cleaner was formulated especially for Industrial Metal supply to clean all types of metal.

Water Base Clear Sealer

This product seems to be as strong as the solvent base clear sealers - up to ten years outside. We have managed to reduce the gloss that has been such a problem with most water base sealers.  Right now, it is only recommended for use on bronze, brass, copper, or Sculpt Nouveau's Metal Coatings.

Sprayers

We now offer two sprayers for your patina applications.  The Zep Sprayer is a manual sprayer which is good for fine tuning your droplet size.  The Crown Sprayer is powered by an aerosol propellant and is great for a fine smooth mist.  Moreover, it can also be used with lacquers, dyes, and acid patinas.  The G-100 Gel Coat Spray Gun is used to apply the Metal Coating. It attaches to an air compressor and uses a disposable paper cup. It is a siphon fed unit that is very easy to use. We recommend this unit if you have a large area to cover with the metal coatings.  The G-100 spray gun comes packaged with a # 6 nozzle; we add two smaller nozzles for use with the metal coatings and five extra cups (click here for a photo).  The Harbor Freight sprayer is a very inexpensive version of the G-100 spray gun.  It works very well with the one nozzle that is provided.

Patina Torches

We carry the patina torch handle, which connects to a hose/regulator/propane tank (purchase these at a welding supply store) and we have the torch tips in 1" and 1.5". The torch tip connects to the torch handle. Use the smaller size torch tip for most patina jobs.

Available in many colors, these powders may be mixed into patinas, Solvent Dyes, Dye-Oxides, or clear coatings to add a little iridescent sparkle.

Texture Paint

This sculpture paint is an incredible way to obtain texture on your material before applying the liquid metal coating.  It is water base and easy to manipulate with any tool, much like clay, and will bond to any surface.  Recommended for indoor and outdoor work.
