Cold Liver of Sulfur – Rich Brown Patina

Liver of sulfur or sometimes-called Sulfurated Potash is a very old and traditional patina for bronze, brass, or copper. It is easy to make and also to apply.  This patina is transparent.  Let's look at the formula:

Mix 1 teaspoon Liver of sulfur with a pint of distilled – that’s it.

The mixture doesn’t keep more than two days.

Apply the solution evenly to the clean metal with a brush, sponge, or spray. Let sit for 5 minutes, and then rinse with cold water.

For a darker color you may reapply the solution.

After the metal has dried you may wish to burnish the surface. This will even out the color. If a brass wire brush is used to burnish, a more golden color will occur. Using a steel brush or steel wool will create more of a brown color.

This could be your final patina or use it as a base color and apply another patina over it.
