Ron Young has
been working with patinas and finishes for almost 30 years.
Our
kits are a combination
of the products Ron has developed over the years together with other companies
products. The products that are
from other companies are ones that Ron has tested and uses on his own art.
With the kits, you will be able to produce a wide variety of finishes on
many different materials.
The products in the finish kit are versatile and
complete in that you may use them on any material (iron, steel, aluminum,
copper, bronze, glass, ceramic, plaster, concrete, paper, fabric, canvas, wood,
etc.) You may choose which products
to use and in what order, depending on the finish you desire.
They are complete because everything you need is included in the kit from
primers to protective coatings. Easy
instructions are provided for all the products.
The finish kit contains everything that comes in the
dye kit. In the dye kit there are
10 dye colors, dye thinner, the latest clear coatings, and an instruction book.
Nine of the dye colors (all the primary, secondary, plus black and brown)
are concentrated but transparent. The
tenth color is an opaque white. All
of the dye colors may be mixed with each other to give an unlimited palate.
The dyes may be applied directly on any surface.
This is especially important to those who are working with ferrous
metals.
The dyes contain the best binders and UV inhibitors
available. Although we suggest that your surface have a slight bite to it before
applying. Once dry, the dye is
permanent and may be used on exterior work, yet while you are applying the dye
it may be lifted off with alcohol.
Ron developed the dyes because of the need to match finishes while doing restorations. The dyes may be applied over a new or an existing surface treatment. The dyes may be put on over a patina. If you apply a patina and it doesn't look as you wanted it to, just touch it up with the needed dye color. The dye color is permanent and may be applied in any manner (air brush, sponge, brush, etc.). It is possible to easily achieve a chemical patina look by only using the dyes or, you can create any other type of coloration from subtle to wild. The dyes also are used to tint epoxies, resins, clear coatings, and waxes. They are used on the surface of glass.
Also included in the finish kit are liquid metal coatings 'A' ,'B' and 'C'. They are real metal powders suspended in a water base acrylic. The 'A' metal coatings were developed by a company in San Diego over 30 years ago to simulate a copper roof. They are well tested and very durable outside. The bond is good on any material surface, although as with the dyes there should be a slight bite to the material. The coating's best quality is that it will accept all cold chemical patinas. The patina is simply sprayed on while the metal coating is wet. This enables you to turn any material into a metal. People working on iron, steel, or aluminum may now, by first applying a primer coat, then the metal coating, achieve a beautiful patina finish. The 'B' metal coating works in the same manner as the 'A' coatings except the patina may be applied when the metal coating is wet or dry. This allows you to apply a more exotic patina such as buried, wrapped, or fumed. The ‘B’ Metal Coatings will give you more working time and flexibility. The ‘B’ Coating may be burnished back as with cold castings for a more realistic metal look. We have found that the type B Metal Coating is so much better than the A; we are beginning to phase out the type A. Sculpt Nouveau has now developed type 'C' Metal Coating. Metal Coating C is also a water base product, yet is set with a mild catalyst to allow it to cure so hard that it may be polished with a polishing wheel. This coating allows you to cover materials that will be in abusive situations such as furniture, doors, window frames, handrails, etc. A sample of the “C” Metal Coating is in the finish kit also.
The metal coatings are limitless as to the
variety of materials they may be applied to such as glass, wood, plaster,
ceramic, canvas, fabric, etc.. The
dyes will also work right over the metal coating or in conjunction with a
patina. The metal coatings are easy
to work with. They may be applied in any manner to achieve the look you want
(air brush, sponge, etc.). Since they are water base clean-up is simple.
The liquid metal coating are made with different metal powders.
The powders are bronze, brass, copper, aluminum, and now iron. The new iron metal coating allows you to achieve a real
rusted finish on any material, even iron or steel, without rusting the base
material.
New in the kit are transparent water base
dye-oxide patinas. Ron has been
working on these for a long time and is very excited to have them available.
They are a cross between the solvent base dyes and a patina.
They may be used hot or cold, directly on any metal, in or over another
patina. The colors are brilliant
and UV stable. To tone down the colors dilute with
distilled water.
Ron has included in the finish kit different shades of iridescent
powders. These powders are very
versatile. They mix easily into the
dyes, patina, or your clear sealer. They
add a beautiful dimension to your finish. By
using the dyes, metal coatings, patinas, and iridescent powders the finishes you
can achieve are endless.
Two sealers or clear protective coatings are in the kit. One is called Permalac for indoor or outdoor use. Permalac is a solvent base and will mix with the dyes or powders. The sealer may be applied to all materials Permalac was chosen because of its great bonding abilities, ease of application, and the UV inhibitors it has. The other sealer is Sculpt Nouveau's new water base coating. This coating is great for those of you that do not like solvent based products. It is loaded with UV and corrosive inhibitors and is very long lasting.
Sculpt Nouveau now is making wax. This wax is a combination of everything we have found desirable in a finish, including UV and metal corrosion inhibitors. The wax is tailor made for each group of metals 1- bronze, brass, copper, and aluminum and 2 – iron and steel. The wax becomes such a strong finish that you will need to buff the wax within an hour of applying it. The wax may be the only finish used or it may be applied over a lacquer. For outdoor, rusted iron or steel, we recommend a layer of marine varnish first then the wax. Both types of waxes are in the finish kit. The wax is available in colors also. The wax has become an option to replace a patina or just add more color.
To achieve a texture on your surface the kit includes a water base
texture paint. This is a thick
substance that may be applied easily and then manipulated in any fashion.
The metal coatings may be applied directly over the texture paint.
Use for indoor work only.
This kit has been developed from many years of
studio work. As new products come
out or are found, Ron tests them in his own studio.
If they are found to be a product that is an asset for finishes, it is
included in the kit. So, this is to
say, the kit changes as time goes on. We
include the addresses of the companies manufacturing the products that are not
made by Ron or carried by Sculpt Nouveau. This
way, after you have done your own experimenting you may reorder the products
that you like in the quantities you need. Easy
to follow instructions for each product are included.
After putting together the finish kit, we found
the need to create a Super Finish Kit. This
kit contains everything in the finish kit plus more.
We have included the sprayers, sponges, and other things you will need to
apply the finish products. Also
included is copper leafing, adhesive and the instructions needed to apply a
patina to the leaf. Although the
finish kit contains the most popular colors of metal coating, patinas, and
powders the Super Kit contains an
even greater variety. In the
Ceramic and Iron Kits, we have placed the products you need to experiment on
these material.
